ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ME

Firstly, WELCOME to my website. I am Johann van Rensburg. I trust you will enjoy browsing around, and leave with a pleasant experience gained. I am based in a lovely "not so little anymore" coastal town called Amanzimtoti (place of the sweet waters in ZULU)

My involvement in photography (about 22 years ) goes WAY BACK, to my school days in fact, when a friend gave me a little KODAK instamatic camera, so that I could take some pics on a school tour through Northern Natal and the Drakensburg. At that stage I was in grade 11, or standard nine as the older folks would call it. Well, I filled about 3 spools, had some published in the annual scool magazine, and OH BOY - INSTANT ADDICTION.

Needless to say, as soon as I could afford it, the first SLR followed, and then several others - just the way it goes in this game. These were the years where I learnt the basics, and as you know, mistakes were costly - forcing you to think before you do. No "ERASE" button, No quick "Preview". Just do it right or DIE! Man, where was digital ?
Nevertheless, I pushed ahead, and did many portrait shoots and weddings and functions for friends and also some paying customers.
During this period I also dabbled around in the "Home Bathroom Darkroom", spending many hours testing lenses, processes, film etc - all in a very non-professional way.

Talking about that ever-present itch again, I replaced the SLR's with a video outfit - trying my hand at home editing etc. I must be honest - I got bored very soon, and after about two years got back into shooting film.

And then arrived DIGITAL ! ! !

Needless to say, this changed EVERYTHING ! What a LEARNING CURVE ?
I bought my first camera, a FUJI 602 Zoom second hand, and got instantly HOOKED. Soon thereafter, the FUJI had to make space for a brand new Panasonic FZ20, which I still use now and then. Yes, you guessed right - THAT DSLR IS INEVITABLE.

So I "Took the Plunge" - bought a CANON EOS 350D. By this time, I was at least familiar with the basic post processing requirements etc. and was therefore able to get into the DSLR with all my might. Having all the years of practical experience behind me was hugely beneficial. As it goes with this hobby, the kit was soon expanded, adding several accessories, lenses, flashes, etc.

I am very passionate about photography, and enjoy sharing experiences and expertise with others who share the passion.

This website serves many functions - a showcase for my work, a learning ground for others, a launchpad for my photography business etc.

HAVE FUN WHILE YOU'RE HERE, and by all means, LET ME KNOW IF I CAN IMPROVE SOMETHING !
